Club History |
Wimborne Motor Cycle club was first formed in October 1962 by motor cycle and car enthusiasts from the area under the name of Wimborne & District Motor Cycle & Light Car Club, the first grasstrack meeting was run on 31st May 1964. Originally, the Club promoted trails, scrambles (now known as motoX) and grasstracks. Unfortunately due to lack of venues and competitors the trials section ceased to be in the late 80’s and also the scramble section saw it’s demise in the mid 70’s, but grasstrack racing still remains today and the only discipline the Club runs nowadays. At their Annual General Meeting in January 1968 it was decided to change the Club name to Wimborne Motor Cycle Club and in December 1968 Wimborne’s Town Clerk gave permission to use the town’s crest in it’s emblem. The badge is still used today and as illustrated. The Club try to run at least three events per season, an open to centre meeting, the Jim Coles Spectacular, which used to be a sidecar only event, but nowadays there are not enough sidecars for the whole event and of course the prestigious Wimborne Whoppa, which was first run in 1969. Our meetings include 250cc, 350cc and 500cc solo events, 500cc sidecars and 1000cc sidecars and also Youth events of Auto, Cadets, Juniors and Intermediates. In addition to these three events the Club has run events on behalf of the governing body, the ACU (Auto Cycle Union). They ran the National Championships in 1986, the Inter Centre Team Championships in 1988, first round of the British Masters in 1990 and 1992 and in 1985 the 500cc sidecar European Semi Final and also the National Youth Championships. Our venue is at Pilford Farm, Pilford Lane, Uddens, Wimborne, Dorset, BH21 7BD and is signposted off the A31 Ferndown/Wimborne Bypass. We are extremely grateful to our landowner, Mr. Gareth Dean for his permission to run our events on his land. In recent years the Club has gone through some very testing times, from 2000-2005 we were not able to organise meetings due to firstly an epidemic of Foot & Mouth, then we lost our venue due to our landowner dying and then we hit severe financial problems when the Club funds were reduced to a small two figured sum! But the Club Committee would not give up and in 2005 after much fund raising and diehard sponsors the Club were able to resume racing again with the Jim Coles Spectacular. 2007 was not a good year for any Motor Cycle Club, what with never ending rain which proved the stumbling block for the Southern Centre Championships in June and another epidemic of Foot & Mouth causing the demise of the Wimborne Whoppa. We are now looking to 2008 to be a better year and can announce that the Wimborne Club have been awarded the 500cc Sidecar European Semi Final on 2/3rd August and organization has already started on this event, which will include the Junior Wimborne Whoppa. Wimborne Club are continually on the lookout for sponsors, as costs of running meetings nowadays are astronomical. Sponsors will be rewarded by advertising around the track, in our programme and can also have displays around the track, so please do get in touch with our Committee members, displayed on our Contacts Page. We also welcome new members to our Club and also new ideas, so please download a Membership Form, join today and be welcomed into the fold.
